My son, DJ, had Auditory Integration Therapy 22 years ago and it worked beautifully on all sounds except coughing. When people cough he physically hits them. He says that is the only sound that is painful now and there used to be MANY! I was told to never let him wear earphones after having AIT done because it could reverse what it fixed successfully and we haven't for 22 years. The coughing pain is so distressful to DJ that we thought about getting some headphones that help make things not so loud for him. After 22 years would it still be a possibility that it could take away the good that happened with the AIT 22 years ago or would it probably be okay to wear head phones after all this time? Thank you so much! Andrea22 Apr, 2017 3:41 PMI would highly recommend that you have another audiogram in which ALL frequencies are tested. There is likely some remaining hyper-sensitivity and he may need to do another round of AIT to target the specific frequency that is causing his trouble.
As for whether using headphones after so many years could still reverse the benefits achieved after doing the headphones, it is possible. Dr. Berard recommended NEVER using headphones after completion of the AIT program. I would like to set up a free consultation with our AIT practitioner for you to discuss his particular situation. Please give us a call at your earliest convenience at 828-683-6900.
Is AIT safe for a person that has seizures? 28 Dec, 2016 6:51 PMWe always recommend checking with your neurologist before proceeding with AIT. Generally speaking, AIT is safe with seizures as long as the seizures are under control. The only time we do not recommend AIT is if the seizures are triggered by sound (which is very rare). Dr. Berard found that AIT will sometimes actually help decrease seizures although there may be some adjustment period where medications may need to be adjusted. Please contact us for individual situations. 828-683-6900

is there counter-indication AIT during hyperbaric sessions thank so much
2 Aug, 2016 12:45 PMThere are no counter-indications from doing AIT during hyperbaric sessions. Just be sure it is actually the Berard method of Auditory Integration Training that is being done. Please call us if you would like more information at 828-683-6900.

do you know if anyone makes headphones that can be worn by a child or adult that has gone through AIT? School and airplanes required the use of headsets in labs or while flying. it makes it nearly imposable for my child to feel "normal" in school when she cannot wear headsets like all the other kids. and flights of course she nor I can watch movies as we can't wear headsets. yes, both my daughter and I have been through AIT. thanks 20 Jul, 2016 7:35 PMWearing headphones after completion of the AIT program is strongly discouraged as it can undo all the progress made during the treatment. However, there are some alternatives. One thing is to wear the headphones "in front" of the ears; place the pads of the earphones on the face just in front of the ears so the sound isn't going directly into the ear canal. Another alternative, if using earbuds, is to let them dangle in front of the ears. Last, there is an option called "open-back" earphones. These are made so that the back of the earphones are open to allow the percussion of the music escape and not be forced into the ears. The draw-back to these earphones is that some sound does escape into the environment so they are not ideal for close environments like an airplane or small classroom (although some teachers say this is not an issue if the other children are wearing headphones since it isolates them from the sound). If you would like more information about these alternatives, please give us a call to speak directly with our AIT practitioner, Sarah Gewanter.
this is for an adult. Is it the same?6 Apr, 2016 5:35 PMThanks for your interest. Yes, we do work with all ages including adults. We individualize the program so it is set for your specific needs. Please contact us again to discuss.
I am a working professional teacher and have done two sessions of the Tomatis Method in the past 10 years without being able to fully complete one of them. I sometimes have difficulty recognizing tones and would like to improve my hearing. However, because of my work I can't spend a lot of time at an office. I read about your home based program and would like to have more information about it.
Joachim Arnold 3 Dec, 2015 12:34 PMDear Joachim,
Thank you for your interest. The Berard AIT home program can be done based on your schedule. Total number of sessions is 20. Each session is 1/2 hour and can be done either once per day or twice a day (with at least 3 or more hours in between). There is flexibility of timing so that you can do 2 sessions on some days and 1 session on others. After the 10th session, you can take a break of a couple of days. Please call or email us for more details and to discuss your particular situation. We individualize the program based on audiograms and an evaluation to meet individual needs.
I look forward to hearing from you. call 828-683-6900 or email: firstname.lastname@example.org
I am in western New York and am very interested in AIT for my autistic son- lots of stimming, head shaking, verbal stims, echolalia. I've read that home based programs do not provide the same training as in office programs. I do not have any practitioners in my area. What do you suggest ?25 Nov, 2015 1:04 PMMany home programs available are not based on Berard's method of Auditory Integration Training and therefore will not provide the same results as the Berard method. In the past, the home-based program was not an option because of the limitations with recording equipment. However, within the past nine or ten years, technology has improved to the point that we are now able to provide an in-home program that equals what is offered by Berard practitioners using the Audiokinetron equipment that was developed by Dr. Guy Berard.
To further discuss how the in-home program works, please call our office at 828-683-6900.
My husband had stroke 5 years ago. Can not talk much or understand something's I say ..especially new things...have to write it down for him to read. Can this therapy help him? 11 Oct, 2015 4:58 PMYes. When a brain suffers an injury, such as a stroke, neural pathways can be damaged or closed off and information that was once easily recalled is suddenly blocked. AIT helps retrain the brain to learn new ways of moving information, creating new pathways, especially through the auditory system.
|what is the at home cost?10 Oct, 2015 6:02 PMBecause cost varies depending on the individual needs of the participant, we ask that you contact the office for information regarding fees. |My daughter aged 4 years is an autistic girl. I want Auditary Integration Therapy for her. I live in India. How can we treat our child with this therapy. please tell me. 10 Feb, 2015 6:59 AMAIT is very helpful for those diagnosed with Autism. The first step is to call us to schedule an evaluation which takes about 1 hour. Once the evaluation is completed, we can ship the personalized equipment and instructions to you, anywhere in the world that UPS delivers, so that the program can be done in your home. |
I understand that someone who underwent AIT is not supposed to listen to music on headphones because it can reverse the effects of therapy. If someone underwent AIT twelve years ago, is this still an issue or can they now listen on headphones?9 Jan, 2015 4:58 PMThe use of headphones is still an issue, even after several years since completion of the AIT program. There are, however, alternatives that will allow you to listen to music. Headphones are normally closed back which means the sound has no where to go but into the ear; these types should be avoided. There are now "open-back" headphones that allow the percussion of the sound to escape and not force itself into the ear. You should be able to find this type of headphone by doing an internet search for open-back headphones. If you have trouble finding this type of headphone or want to know which kind we have tested and recommend, just call our office and we will be happy to help you.
how can it help for a 28 year old who only speaks spanish 15 Dec, 2014 8:11 PMBecause the AIT program filters out frequencies of music, the words spoken do not have a direct bearing on the efficacy of the program. As a matter of fact, as a part of our collection of Pop music, we have several tracks of French music that we have used with clients who speak only English. Also, we have the classical set which would be appropriate and enjoyable for someone of any nationality.
Hello I am adult with Asperger Syndrome. I was diagnosed in 2011. I have a lot of trouble with sensory issues, especially very sensitive hearing. I have to wear headsets and earplugs and use white noise machines a lot, as I live in a noisy neighborhood. I would like to know more information about this as I think it could help me. 3 Nov, 2014 1:40 PMHearing sensitivity is a very common complaint among our clients. As part of the evaluation by our practitioner, an audiogram is recommended which can help determine if the sensitivity is to specific frequencies or all sounds in general. Once she has this information, she will be able to determine how to develop a program tailored to meet your individual needs. We then ship the personalized program to you to be done in your home. Please call our office to speak to us about getting started or to ask questions at (828)683-6900 or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Should it be intensive in 10 days (2 per day) or can I give my son 1 session a day? 15 Jul, 2014 12:10 PMThe sessions can be done once or twice a day as long as they are done on a daily basis.
|How much does the in home program cost?8 Jul, 2014 6:31 AMBecause cost varies depending on the individual needs of the participant, we ask that you contact the office for information regarding fees. |i would like for a call back as soon as possible.. my son diagnosed with PDD/autism has had AIT 2x and i see that it helped... he has trouble staying outside and plugs his ears when walking to and from car, bus, etc... i need to know the cost and how soon can he start... i have insurance and a scholarship award... number to reach me at is 203.913.9779... 18 Jun, 2013 4:54 AMThe out-of-pocket expense will vary depending on your individual insurance coverage. When you call to schedule an evaluation, we can get your insurance information and verify your coverage to give you an idea of what your cost will be after insurance pays. Depending on whether a hearing test is recommended by our practitioner, and if so, how long it takes to have that test completed, the time to get started can be under a week (allowing time for shipping).|
I would like to know how i can get AIT services for my 8 years old son who was diagnosed of PDD. He is speech delayed. He says what he wants with minimum vocabularies, carries out commands but doesnt hold a two-way communication.
I live in Harford County, Maryland27 May, 2013 8:50 AMIt is very helpful with many of the symptoms of PDD. The first step is to call us to schedule an evaluation which takes about 1 hour. Once the evaluation is completed, we can ship the personalized equipment and instructions to you so that the program can be done in your home.
Is there a place in/near Sacramento, CA for treatment/therapy and evaluation? Please advise. 9 May, 2013 1:40 AMThe Berard AIT in-home program can be done anywhere. An audiologist can do the testing in your area; with the results from that test our practitioner can ask the questions to determine your individual needs by doing an over-the-phone evaluation with you. After the evaluation, we ship the equipment directly to you so that you can do everything in the comfort of your home. All you will need is a quality CD player.
Does AIT help people with Obssessive Compulsive Disorder?6 Apr, 2013 8:50 PMDepending on the reason for the Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, yes, it can help. Often OCD is a coping mechanism to help when feeling overloaded. If it is from sensory overload, the AIT often helps to reduce and sometimes eliminate the OCD behaviors.
My son is receiving AIT training. Will it still be effective if we did this without a hearing test? 11 Feb, 2013 7:05 PMYes, the basic program “broadband filtering” is used with clients who can do be tested and it will work. However, as your son develops and improves, if he becomes able to test, we can then further individualize the AIT program based on the audiogram. Please call or email to discuss your specific needs. (828)683-6900 or firstname.lastname@example.org .
AIT can't be once in life and doesn't need to repeated ?5 Feb, 2013 6:07 PM No, AIT can be repeated if needed. With some people one time is enough and everything corrects and normalizes, however for others it can be helpful to repeat AIT. We include follow up evaluations after 6 month to one year to determine if a repeat treatment is indicated. Dr. Berard’s approach is to wait for 6 months – 1 year to allow for full re-organization and integration of the changes and improvements. Once done, we re-evaluate to see if another go round of AIT is needed and individualize the program at the time. With more severe conditions we do find that it is helpful to do repeat treatments as each time it is done you can see improvements until either everything normalizes or you see no further change.
Does AIT has irrevrisable side effect on the brain of child six years old ? 5 Feb, 2013 5:54 PMNo, the effects of AIT are not irreversible. No long-term negative effects have ever been reported to need reversing so the training has never been purposefully reversed. After many years of testing and monitoring, it has been found that the use of headphones after AIT treatment can "undo" the progress made through AIT.
Does AIT has irrevrisable side effect on the brain of child six years old ?5 Feb, 2013 5:54 PMFortunately, there have been no reports of any long-term negative effects with AIT. There are children who have effects from other conditions such as mineral deficiencies or toxic substances they have been exposed to. When we evaluate a child, we always try to determine if anything else may be going on that should be addressed and will give recommendations accordingly.
There are certain things that can in fact undo the benefits of the AIT program such as listening to music with headphones or certain medications which effect hearing. We include written instructions and reminders regarding follow up care to maintain the benefits as much as possible.
My grandchild is 6 years old and doing pre-school this year. His teacher suggested that he does the AIT programme. How do they and on what grounds do they decide that a child needs this? What is the problem with him that he needs this programme?
Thank you and regards 30 Jan, 2013 12:21 PMThe first step in determining if a person will benefit from the Berard AIT program is by speaking with our practitioner, Sarah Gewanter, MSW, so that she can do a thorough evaluation. During this evaluation, she will ask many questions about the behavior and development of an individual. For instance, she might ask if the potential client has trouble in social settings, or whether they are sensitive to particular sounds, etc. The evaluation can be done as a phone consultation.
Problems that would are addressed by the Berard AIT program include but are not limited to: dyslexia, trouble focusing in learning environments or following instructions, autism, depression, hypersensitivity to sounds, brain injuries, ADHD, Auditory Processing Disorder, speech and language delays and many more. Please call or email to discuss your specific needs. (828)683-6900 or email@example.com .
Is there a restriction on the time intervals between AIT sessions?
My son took the 20 sessions and I feel improvement and want to take another set of sessions. So when I can repeat them? He finished them a month ago.18 Nov, 2012 9:07 PMYour son would be a canidate for boosters 2 months after completing the program and then after 6 months we could re-evaluate and see if he is ready for a second round of AIT.
My grandson has CAPD, ADD, ADHD, sensory issues, and hypersensitivity to loud noises. What is the cost of your program? 7 Sep, 2012 4:16 PMWe do work with people with the cost. We can work with insurance, scholarships and interest fee payment plans. The fees vary based on need. Please contact us for more specific information. Thank you!
Do you have references?21 Aug, 2012 10:57 AMYes, we are happy to provide a network of parent and participants's names and phone numbers upon request.
My child can be difficult to work with. How can I get him/her to wear the headphones? 21 Aug, 2012 10:57 AMMost children find AIT to be calming, soothing, and relaxing once they get used to wearing the headphones. Start practicing beforehand. We usually see quick cooperation to the surprise of many parents. We have many years of experience and techniques that will help. We have only had one child since 1994 who was not able to complete the program.
Do you offer the Berard method of AIT? What is the difference between the Berard method and others such as Tomatis or Samonas?21 Aug, 2012 10:56 AMYes, we offer the traditional Berard Method using the original Berard equipment the Audiokinetron) and Berard recommended protocols. The Berard method is the only method that has formal research substantiation rather than purely anecdotal reports. In general, Berard method is known for help with audiologic and nuerologic related issues that can also positively impact social and emotional issues. Most of the other auditory programs are based on the Tomatis method that promotes the idea of improvements in social and emotional issues (Tomatis believed, like Bruno Bettlheim, that autism was caused by a mother/child bonding problem and so focused more on the emotional/psychological areas rather than the audiological and neurological which Berard focuses on). For detailed comparisons and information on the different auditory methods please see: www.autismwebsite.com/ari/treatment/tomatis.htm
Which treatment should be done first? 21 Aug, 2012 10:55 AMAIT is an excellent precursor to other therapies and training programs as it helps normalize the brain and sensory systems, which then enable the person to use other therapies more effectively. More specific and detailed information or recommendations focused on your child will be provided in the evaluation.
How many sessions do we need? Is this something we do just once?21 Aug, 2012 10:54 AMThere are twenty sessions to the program. We also include four additional assessments during and after AIT. Some people find one set of AIT sessions to be sufficient. However in some situations we find continued improvements with repeat sessions. This will be determined in the follow-up assessments.
Is there any research on AIT? 21 Aug, 2012 10:54 AMYes, in general 75-80% of candidates get positive benefits. There have been no reports of any long-term negative effects. For summaries of research see at the SAIT website: http://www.autism.com/families/therapy/aitsummary.htm
Do you offer an "In-Home" program? What equipment do I need?21 Aug, 2012 10:53 AMYes. The only equipment you will need is a CD player that has a jack to plug headphones into. We supply everything else. Our provider makes herself available to help supervise and monitor by telephone as you proceed through the program.
Is financial aid available? 21 Aug, 2012 10:52 AMYes, based on financial need. Scholarship applications will be reviewed once the initial evaluation has been scheduled and will be discussed at the time of the evaluation.
Who is a good candidate?21 Aug, 2012 10:41 AMChildren (age 3 or older) and adults with learning difficulties, speech and language disorders, sensory issues including auditory, tactile or other sensory sensitivities (hyper or hypo), central auditory processing disorder (CAPD), dyslexia, pervasive developmental disorder (PDD), autism spectrum disorders, attention deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity, anxiety, depression, poor eye contact, distractibility, concentration problems and other areas. Specifics will be determined and discussed in the evaluation.
What is the minimum age that someone can complete AIT?
Maximum age? 21 Aug, 2012 10:38 AMThe youngest age recommended by Dr. Guy Berard is 3 years old. There is no maximum age. We have seen great results with all age ranges of people even into the elderly. Please contact us directly for more information regarding special situations.
